Test Methodology

Test images: 50 files — 10 e-commerce white-background, 10 portraits, 10 landscapes, 10 screenshots, 10 logos/graphics. All original format: JPEG.

Key finding: TinyPNG offers the best balance of quality and compression, but limits uploads to 20 per batch and has API quota issues. Squoosh achieves the highest compression ratio but is the slowest (pure front-end processing). Compressor.io is the most hassle-free free option.

01. TinyPNG — The Balance King

TinyPNG’s core advantage is its compression algorithm. It uses smart lossy compression: analyzing color and detail, prioritizing removal of imperceptible pixel data.

50 photos averaged from 1.2MB to 290KB — 76% compression. In a 5-person blind test, quality was nearly indistinguishable from originals.

Downside: web version limits 20 images per batch (desktop TinyOpt has no limit), and the free API allows 500 images per month.

02. Compressor.io — The Hassle-Free Option

Compressor.io offers lossy and lossless modes. Lossy mode achieves 72% compression, free forever, no registration, no limits.

Downside: online processing depends on upload/download speed — 50 images took about 4 minutes including queue time. No API, so no automation integration.

03. Squoosh — Highest Compression, Slowest Speed

Squoosh is a Google open-source project supporting virtually all modern formats (WebP, AVIF, JPEG XL, etc.). You can manually tweak encoder parameters, pushing compression to 82%.

Downside: pure front-end JavaScript running on your CPU. 50 images took ~8 minutes — 2-3× slower than other tools. Best for single-image fine-tuning, not batch processing.

04. Kraken.io — Enterprise Features, Higher Entry Barrier

Kraken.io offers the most complete enterprise feature set: API, CDN, WordPress plugin, auto-optimization. Compression is close to TinyPNG at 75%.

Downside: free tier is just 100MB trial. Paid plans start at $5/month. For individual site owners and small teams, the pricing is steep. Enterprise users may find it worthwhile.

05. Imagify — Best for WordPress Users

Imagify is built by the WP Rocket team and deeply integrated with WordPress. Install the plugin for auto-compression on upload. Compression rate: 73%. Free quota: 20MB/month.

Downside: primarily serves the WordPress ecosystem. If you don’t use WP, the web version is very limited. 20MB free quota is also quite small.

When You Need Desktop-Grade Batch Processing

All 5 tools share one limitation: they’re online tools, so speed and volume are constrained by browser uploads and downloads.
