2026 Online Image Compression Tools Compared: TinyPNG vs Compressor.io vs Squoosh vs Kraken vs Imagify

tool comparisononline compressionbenchmarkTinyPNG

There are too many online image compression tools. Nearly every month, a new site pops up claiming “highest compression ratio” or “lossless quality.”

But how do they actually perform? I took 50 mixed-scenario photos (product shots, portraits, landscapes, screenshots, logos) and tested 5 mainstream tools under the same network conditions, same time, same files.

The results may surprise you.

Test Methodology

  • Test images: 50 files — 10 e-commerce white-background, 10 portraits, 10 landscapes, 10 screenshots, 10 logos/graphics. All original format: JPEG.
  • Metrics: Compression ratio (lower is better), speed (faster is better), visual quality (5-person blind rating), free quota (more is better)
  • Tools tested: TinyPNG.com, Compressor.io, Squoosh.app, Kraken.io, Imagify.io

Results Overview

ToolAvg Compression50 Images TimeQuality (5pt)Free Quota
TinyPNG76%~3 min4.8500/month/key
Compressor.io72%~4 min4.5Unlimited (lossy)
Squoosh82%~8 min4.2Unlimited (local)
Kraken.io75%~3 min4.6100MB trial
Imagify73%~5 min4.420MB/month

Key finding: TinyPNG offers the best balance of quality and compression, but limits uploads to 20 per batch and has API quota issues. Squoosh achieves the highest compression ratio but is the slowest (pure front-end processing). Compressor.io is the most hassle-free free option.

01. TinyPNG — The Balance King

TinyPNG’s core advantage is its compression algorithm. It uses smart lossy compression: analyzing color and detail, prioritizing removal of imperceptible pixel data.

50 photos averaged from 1.2MB to 290KB — 76% compression. In a 5-person blind test, quality was nearly indistinguishable from originals.

Downside: web version limits 20 images per batch (desktop TinyOpt has no limit), and the free API allows 500 images per month.

👉 Need more than 500/month with the TinyPNG engine? Download TinyOpt Desktop for multi-key concurrent processing.

02. Compressor.io — The Hassle-Free Option

Compressor.io offers lossy and lossless modes. Lossy mode achieves 72% compression, free forever, no registration, no limits.

Downside: online processing depends on upload/download speed — 50 images took about 4 minutes including queue time. No API, so no automation integration.

03. Squoosh — Highest Compression, Slowest Speed

Squoosh is a Google open-source project supporting virtually all modern formats (WebP, AVIF, JPEG XL, etc.). You can manually tweak encoder parameters, pushing compression to 82%.

Downside: pure front-end JavaScript running on your CPU. 50 images took ~8 minutes — 2-3× slower than other tools. Best for single-image fine-tuning, not batch processing.

04. Kraken.io — Enterprise Features, Higher Entry Barrier

Kraken.io offers the most complete enterprise feature set: API, CDN, WordPress plugin, auto-optimization. Compression is close to TinyPNG at 75%.

Downside: free tier is just 100MB trial. Paid plans start at $5/month. For individual site owners and small teams, the pricing is steep. Enterprise users may find it worthwhile.

05. Imagify — Best for WordPress Users

Imagify is built by the WP Rocket team and deeply integrated with WordPress. Install the plugin for auto-compression on upload. Compression rate: 73%. Free quota: 20MB/month.

Downside: primarily serves the WordPress ecosystem. If you don’t use WP, the web version is very limited. 20MB free quota is also quite small.

When You Need Desktop-Grade Batch Processing

All 5 tools share one limitation: they’re online tools, so speed and volume are constrained by browser uploads and downloads.

When your needs scale to “500 per week” or “2,000 per month,” online tools expose these bottlenecks:

  • 20-image upload limit per batch
  • Downloading zip files one by one
  • Privacy risk from uploading images to third parties
  • API quota insufficient for volume

This is where desktop TinyOpt shines — unlimited drag-and-drop, multi-key auto-failover for quota breaking, local processing without third-party uploads.

Choosing the Right Tool

Ask yourself three questions:

  1. How many per batch? — Under 20, any online tool works. Over 50, go desktop.
  2. How many per month? — Under 500, one TinyPNG free key is enough. Over 500, desktop + multi-key.
  3. Privacy sensitive? — Product images involving unreleased products? Use a desktop tool for local processing.

FAQ

01. Can TinyPNG-compressed images be used commercially?

Yes. TinyPNG doesn’t retain any rights to compressed images, and it doesn’t affect commercial use. Free key and paid key produce identical results.

02. Which has better compression ratio — WebP or JPEG?

Under the same engine, WebP is about 25-35% smaller than JPEG. However, WebP isn’t compatible with older browsers. Use WebP for your website and JPEG for scenarios like email.

03. Do these tools store my images?

TinyPNG officially deletes uploaded images within 1 hour after compression. Squoosh is pure front-end — images never leave your computer. Other tools’ policies vary — check privacy terms before compressing sensitive images.

04. Is compression quality consistent across different images?

No. Different content types (photos vs screenshots vs logos) compress very differently. Photos achieve the highest compression (70-80%), logos and solid-color graphics the lowest (10-30%), with screenshots in between.

05. Is there a difference between the online and desktop engines?

TinyOpt Desktop and the TinyPNG website use the same Tinify compression engine — results are identical. The desktop advantage: no per-batch limits, multi-key support, local processing without third-party upload.

Summary

If you compress 20-30 images a month, the web version of TinyPNG is sufficient. If you have hundreds weekly, or the volume makes online tools impractical, try TinyOpt Desktop. Same engine, 10× the efficiency.
