WebP vs AVIF in 2026: Which Should Your Product Images Actually Use?
Think picking WebP means you’re done? In 2026 AVIF squeezes images even smaller — but in the wrong place, it can backfire on your first screen.
Last month I ran an image audit for an independent fashion store. The owner had already converted every product photo to WebP and PageSpeed was green. When I converted just the hero image to AVIF, the same file got 26% smaller — yet on a low-end Android phone, the first screen actually decoded slower. AVIF’s pricier decoding ate into the bytes it had just saved.
This isn’t an article about which format is “more advanced.” It answers one question: when should your product images use AVIF, and when should they not?

Two takeaways: ① WebP alone already shrinks an image to a fraction of the JPEG; ② AVIF is roughly 26% smaller than WebP, but encoding is 5-10x slower and decoding is heavier on the CPU. Every section below is about when that trade-off is worth it.
01. WebP: Still the Safe Default in 2026
WebP is the “you can’t go wrong” choice: full support in Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Safari — 96%+ browser coverage; fast encoding, so batch runs of a few hundred images are painless; and Shopify, WooCommerce and most CMS backends accept it natively.
One thing people get wrong: Shopify’s CDN automatically serves a WebP (and, to supported browsers, an AVIF) variant of the image you upload — but only of what you upload. If your source file is an uncompressed 2.4MB JPEG, the CDN is really serving “a compressed JPEG re-encoded as WebP,” still landing around 300-400KB. Compress the source to a 175KB WebP before uploading, and that’s the tier the CDN delivers.
In one line: the CDN won’t compress for you — compression happens at the source.
02. AVIF: The Compression Ceiling, With 3 Real Costs
AVIF uses AV1 video encoding for still images and is currently the compression ceiling. On the same product photo it’s another 20-30% smaller than WebP. But “smaller” isn’t “better” — three costs rarely get mentioned:
① Encoding is 5-10x slower. The AV1 encoder trades compute for compression. You won’t feel it on one image, but on a batch of 200 it’s the difference between a few minutes and tens of minutes. That’s why AVIF suits “a few, done carefully” — not “the whole site, blindly.”
② Decoding is heavier — low-end phones can stutter. AVIF decoding demands more from the CPU/GPU. A smaller image doesn’t always mean a faster page: if your LCP image is an AVIF and the visitor is on a two-year-old budget Android, decode time can eat the download savings and push LCP up.
③ Safari support has a threshold. Full support only arrived in Safari 16.4 / iOS 16.4 (roughly 2023 onward). Overall coverage is already 92%+, but older Safari builds don’t understand AVIF at all — you need a WebP/JPEG fallback or the image breaks.
Remember AVIF’s precondition: you can ship a fallback, and you can measure real first-screen decoding.
03. Decision Matrix: Default to WebP, Use AVIF for Heroes
Applying those costs to real scenarios makes the call obvious:

Capable browsers grab the 130KB AVIF; older Safari silently falls back to WebP/JPEG. Nobody gets a broken image.

Two numbers say it all: batch WebP already cuts ~80% of the traffic; AVIF saves another ~20% on top — at 5-10x the encoding time, plus the compatibility and decoding risk.
So the engineering call is obvious: instead of converting all 200 images to AVIF and betting on the risks, convert 195 to WebP and 5 heroes to AVIF. Nearly the same bytes saved, a fraction of the trouble.

05. Your Images Stay Yours: No Cloud Library Required

01. Does Safari support AVIF now?
Yes — Safari 16.4+ / iOS 16.4+ (systems from early 2023). Older Safari builds don’t recognize AVIF, so keep a WebP/JPEG fallback.
02. Can AVIF be my only format?
Not recommended. It’s only ~20-30% smaller than WebP, and it brings slow encoding, heavier decoding and older-Safari gaps. For most sites, site-wide WebP plus a few AVIF heroes is the sweet spot.
03. Will slow AVIF encoding delay my launch?
Only if you use it for a few hero images, where the time is negligible. Don’t put it on hundreds of product shots — that’s paying ten times the processing for a ~20% bandwidth saving.
04. Can my Shopify store use AVIF?
Yes, but you don’t convert anything yourself. Upload WebP sources and Shopify’s CDN renders AVIF variants for capable browsers, falling back to WebP for everyone else. Let the CDN own the compatibility headache.
05. My first screen got slower after AVIF. What’s going on?
Almost certainly a low-end phone decoding AVIF slowly. AVIF saves transfer time but can spend it on decode time. Put the LCP image back on WebP and decide with PageSpeed/Lighthouse data.
